To the Editor of the Crimson:
May I have a little space for what must be my final word on the United War Fund Drive? That drive will end on Wednesday, and it looks as if it would end short of its goal. If it does, there will be double defeat, physical defeat in the non-performance of essential services, both in the Community Fund agencies of Greater Boston and in the national work of the Red Cross, moral defeat in the failure of one segment of the American people to meet the first serious task brought to them by this war. Everyone is talking about war sacrifice. Here is the chance to make a start.
Make no mistake about it, the Fund, as it comes to the students, is war effort. Before Pearl Harbor, the Community Fund was to make no direct solicitation of the student body. After Pearl Harbor, the Red Cross issued a call for fifty million dollars, and the original Community Fund goal of five and a half millions became the United War Fund goal of seven and a half. Harvard's share in that tremendous sum is $40,000.
If Harvard is to raise $40,000, or anything like it, it must have the help of its students. The Employees Division has responded magnificently, the Faculty Division, weakened by absences in Washington and an increase of those giving at their homes, will hardly improve much on its present showing. There are now $29,000 in the box, and two days in which to get the rest. The Fund Office is in Wadsworth House. Elliott Perkins, Chairman, Harvard Unit.
