WASHINGTON--A total of 1,292 officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps. are prisoners of the Japanese or missing in the Far Eastern War, spokesman for the two fighting forces before the Senate Naval Affairs Committee today.
The disclosure--the first official report on the human toll in the Pacific struggle since Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox made public casualties in the Pearl Harbor attack--raised to 5,273 the known number of Army, Navy and Marine Corps personnel killed, wounded or missing.
