Nickerson, Squash Player, Chosen 1941 Harvard Hero

Eugene H. Nickerson '41, who in spite of a paralyzed right arm was star of last year's Varsity squash match with Yale, was selected by William J. Bingham '16, director of Athletics in his annual report issued yesterday, as Harvard Athletic Hero for the year.

His arm crippled by an attack of infantile paralysis five years ago, Nickerson took up squash, learned to play with his left, and by the middle of his Junior year became the thirteenth ranking player in the University.

The coach encouraged him to develop further the muscles in his left arm, and by February of last year, he was the number one player on the Varsity squad. In the Yale match, with the score tied at four all. Nickerson dropped the first game, but won the next three to give the team its 5 to 4 victory.
