Before 14,281 excited people in Boston Garden Saturday night, William J. Bingham '16, director of athletics, climbed a shaky ladder to the imposing height of 15 feet 7 1/4 inches and took the measurement that made official Cornelius Warmerdam's record-breaking pole vault in the feature event of the 53rd annual B. A. A. games.
Many observers said they were just as concerned over Bingham's precarious ascent on the ladder as Warmerdam's jump to the same height on only a slender pole. But Bingham's statement, "it was a good big quarter of an inch over 15:7 inches constituted the final record-making verdict.
Warmerdam broke three of his previous records with this one jump Saturday: his former B. A. A. record, his world indoor record, and his outdoor record of 15 feet 5 3/8 inches.
