Setbacks on two fronts jolted the Axis Sunday--in Russia, where Red Army shock troops stormed westward through crumbling German lines toward the old Polish frontier, and in the southeastern Mediterranean zone, where British forces struck heavily by land, sea and air.
Russian columns streamed through White Russia, by-passing German strong points in a concerted series of thrusts calculated to whittle up the invasion army and render untenable the all-important Smolensk base.
In Libya the Royal Air Force scored one of its most impressive successes of the whole campaign. British and Australian airmen shot down 20, damaged ten planes, and suffered not a single loss.
