Over the Wire

(February 9--By United Press)

WASHINGTON -- Japanese invasion hordes pounded Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Bataan lines from front and rear today but the embattled defenders fought back ferociously in what loomed as the climactic struggle in the battle of the Philippines.

Heavy infantry assaults were repulsed by the greatly outnumbered American-Filipino forces while across Manila Bay from Bataan concealed Japanese short batteries, which have been hammering at American island fortifications for three days, were subject to effective counter-fire.

The Berlin radio admitted that the Russians continued to attack stubbornly despite heavy losses and had driven several salients into German lines. These wedges would be wiped as soon as the weather moderated.
