Congress to Air Maas' Charges

WASHINGTON--A thorough Congressional airing of Rep. Melvin Maas' charges that the Navy is losing the war in the Pacific and conceals the truth from the public, appeared to be in taking shape tonight as the Navy maintained stoney silence.

House Republican Leader Joseph W. Martin declared bluntly that Congress must act swiftly and effectively if the "astounding conditions" portrayed by Maas, ranking Republican on the Naval Affairs Committee, are true.

Sen. Arthur H. Vandenberg, R., Mich., advocate of Senate legislation to create a joint bi-partisan committee to consult with President Roosevelt on prosecution of the war, said he was "perfectly amazed" by Mass' assertions.
