WASHINGTON--Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker, the United States greatest air ace in World War I and a confidential adviser to Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson in this one, is overdue on a flight between Oahu, Hawaii, and another Pacific island, the Army announced tonight.
All available air and sea forces are searching for him and his crew, the number unknown here, but officials said privately the outcome looked "pretty hopeless."
The 52-year-old Rickenbacker, President of Eastern Airlines and one of the most colorful figures in aviation history, last was heard from in the early evening of Oct. 21 when he radioed an island post that he had a little more than an hour's supply of gasoline remaining.
