SINGAPORE--Upcountry reports of savage fighting above Kuala Lumpur and a communique announcing "no further change in the situation" kindled hope today that the main Japanese drive on Singapore had lost some of its momentum 200 miles or more to the northwest.
The fate of Kuala Lumpur, gateway to Singapore and rubber capital of the world, remained in doubt. Though it obviously was in grave peril from the Japanese thrust down from the Slim River, available reports implied that it was still in British hands.
