Cleo O'Donnell yesterday became the 33rd player to win his Crimson Varsity jersey this season, as Coach Dick Harlow put his charges through a light drill in anticipation of the full game scrimmage scheduled to take place this afternoon.
Punting under pressure, dummy scrimmage, and passing offense and defense were once more emphasized, with most of the aerial work falling on the shoulders of fullback Don McNicol and ends Jack Morgan and Loron MacKinney.
Chip Off Old Block
Short, stocky Sophomore O'Donnell prepared at Worcester Academy. Five feet, eight inches tall and weighing 152 pounds, he is at present a wingback, but, if necessary, can also fill the tailback post. His father was formerly head coach of football at Holy Cross and St. Anselm's.
Harlow expects to announce the players for the Pennsylvania game either next Tuesday or Wednesday, and the squad will leave Cambridge next Thursday night after the usual afternoon practice. On Friday they practice on Franklin Field, and Saturday they meet a powerful Quaker team, weakened this year only by the graduation of the great Francis Xavier Reagan.
Vander Eb Back
Place-kicker Hank Vander Eb, who starred in last year's Harvard-Pennsylvania 10 to 10 tie, will make the trip again this year. Although unable to appear at afternoon practices, Vander Eb has been working on his kicking every morning and will doubtless be available throughout the season whenever his Crimson teammates need an extra point or field goal.
Of the nine men who played the full 60 minutes in last November's Penn game, seven: Tom Gardiner, Burgy Ayres, George Heiden, Captain Franny Lee, Loren MacKinney, Chub Peabody, and Dick Pfister, are back this year and will undoubtedly see action in next week's game.
