"One of the most evenly balanced squads I can remember" is the way Coach Jack Barnaby describes his present Varsity tennis charges. "We have no stars on the team but we have a generous supply of fairly good players."
Barnaby, who also coaches Varsity squash, is getting use to building entirely new teams. His squash team, although gutted by the loss of its first six men through graduation, ended up the season undefeated in intercollegiate competition. Practically the same situation is present in tennis this year with the first six men lost by graduation.
Whether Barnaby can repeat his squash record with the tennis team is yet to be seen. The netmen will be seriously handicapped by the loss of such stars as Burt, Palfrey, and Giikey. The only returning lettermen are Captain Sonny Lyell, Orme Wilson, and Homer Peobdy, who all gained the distinction by playing doubles against Yale last spring.
Jenkins at Number One
None other than minute Jim Jenkins of last year's Freshman team is playing number one singles for the Varsity Jenkins, who hails from Hawaii, is one of the most experienced players on the squad, relying on his accurate soft game to humble large, more powerful opponents.
The present number two singles man is Homer Peabody, who was hampered last year by a bad leg injury which ruined his singles game. He is a two year letterman, having played number eight singles against Yale in his Sophomore year and on the third doubles combination last year.
In the third singles slot is another letterman, Orme Wilson, who, along with most of the other members of the first team, has shown definite improvement over his last year's singles play.
Captain Sonny Lyell, one of the most dependable members of the team, plays number four singles. His forcing game showed up well last Saturday as he swamped his Columbian opponent in two straight love sets.
Ezell Dark Horse
Junior Russ Ellis is in the fifth singles position while the dark horse of the season, Howie Ezell, plays number six. Last year at this time, Ezell was just another House tennis player on the Kirkland team, but his improvement has been so phenomenal that he appears already to be a fixture on the first six.
Coach Barnaby has two doubles teams that seem to work together very well. Lyell and Peabody, although having been beaten in practice, shape up as the best, while Wilson and Ellis appear to be the next best tandem. Barnaby has a host of practically even players from which to plok his third doubles. They are Keith Symon, Lin Burton, Tom Sears, Jack Clarke, Aubrey Gouid, Don Daniels, and Jim Jenkins.
One significant fact about this year's tennis team is that there is only one Senior on it. The majority of the team and the squad is made up of Juniors and Sophomores.
