Great weakness in the pitching department, compensated by hitting strength are the two dominant features of the current Yardling baseball squad. Only one really first-string hurler, Warren Berg, is available for genial, broad-shouldered Coach Samborski's nine, but there are good batters galore.
Leading the team in batting is John Butler, playing third, whose average is now an even .400. He has hit three circuit clouts, and is steady and reliable in the field.
Sandy Macmillan at short, A1 Everts at second, and Brooks Heath, holding down the first sack, together with Butler, make up a green infield which is improving steadily. Macmillan, a left-handed batter, who hits long and hard when he connects, is at present holding the lead-off post in the batting order. Al Everts is batting for .381, and is the most improved member of the team. His tennis experience has given him a good eye for the ball. Heath played in the outfield at school, but handles his first-base job fairly well, although he lacks vital game experience.
The outfield is fairly strong, with Paul Quinn in left, "Fitz" Fitzgibbons in center, and hockey captain A1 Reeves in right. Quinn is not only a steady fielder and a .348 hitter, but a fair catcher and pitcher as well, and may possibly see service at both ends of the battery before the season winds up.
Fitzgibbons is probably the best all-around ball player on the club. He is hitting .333, and is a fast and accurate fielder, Reeves, the other member of the trio, is not as yet equal to the other two, on account of less experience. He was not able to make the spring trip with the squad, and as a result is not a seasoned as his companions.
Warren Berg is the only good pitcher the team has. He has fairly good control, good speed, but needs improvement in his ability to change pace. Leading sub for Berg is Red Willcox, who is improving rapidly. He is steadier now than he was at the start of the season, and he has more control than before. Also on the first team hurling staff are Dick Segnitz and Jock Dean
Paul Delahoyde is better-than-average behind the plate, boasting a good arm, and mounting batting ability. He is a good receiver, calls the pitches well, and is a generally steadying influence for the whole team.
Several infielders, now playing spring football, will boister the team materially when they return to the diamond at the end of next week. Cleo O'Donnell, Walt Wilson, Wayne Johnson, Andy Weich, and Francis Amory are the other substitutes.
All in all, it is a slightly above average Yardling nine, and may, as the season progresses, become an outstanding ball club.
