Warning against "the hasty abandonment of our liberty in the illusion that by adopting tyrannical measures we stave off tyranny," United States Representative Tom Eliot '28 spoke before the Harvard Liberal Union on "A Democratic Defense" yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Kirkland House Junior Common Room.
According to Eliot, there are two main dangers facing the American people at present. The first is the danger of Fifth Column penetration through sabotage groups; the second is the danger that, once Americans recognize the power of the Fifth Column, they will doubtless go on a gigantic "witch-hunt" which will probably hurt many innocent people.
Assuming that no one needed examples of the first danger, Eliot went on to give a detailed illustration of the second. It seems that a bill is now before Congress, which, if passed, will permit the Government to tap telephone wires.
