Southwest England Hit

PLYMOUTH -- England's southwest coasted area underwent heavy attacks during the night by German planes which dumped high explosives in districts previously bombed heavily.

Three separate raids were carried out and many working class homes were destroyed.

Bombs were dropped over a widespread area, in both urban and rural districts. But tentative reports indicated that the raids nowhere approached blitzkrieg intensity.

Anti-aircraft guns on ships joined the vigorous barrage thrown up by the land defenses, keeping the raiders at a great height and contributing to the reduction of the effects of the attack.
