Last night the CRIMSON Network reached a milestone in its development with the broadcasting of a half hour's program of Ruby Newman's music direct from the Lowell House dance floor. For the first time a program was presented which did not originate at home in the Sheppard Hall studios.
At 10:30 the microphone was turned over to Stanley O. Beren '41, chairman of the Lowell House Dance Committee. After about five seconds of dead silence a blast of cheering and music from Lowell House came over the air and the epoch-making program was under way.
Designed by Gordon McCouch '41, and built by John Cochrane '43, the portable broadcasting unit consists of a small speech amplifier, connected with the main transmitter by a two-wire line. Officials of the Network plan to make full use of this new departure in the future, broadcasting athletic events, concerts, and meetings from all over the Yard.
