Commissions in the United States Naval Reserve are open to Juniors majoring in Engineering, Law Professor A. James Casner, head of the new Defense Advisory Board, announced yesterday.

Men in their third year may apply for commissions as Ensigns on a probationary status, and if accepted will be ordered to temporary active service next summer.

Only upon completion of the Senior year and the acquisition of a degree will applicants become regular Ensigns.

Seniors May Apply at Once

Seniors who are concentrating in Engineering may present applications immediately for Naval Reserve commissions. If accepted by the Navy, they become subject to call for active duty during war, or periods of extreme emergency. All Ensigns receive $183 a month plus travelling and uniform allowances.

Students interested in the program can obtain detailed information from Professor Casner by appointment between 2 and 5 o'clock today and also on Wednesday.

Alternative to Draft

Two weeks ago, Professor Casner advanced an alternative to draft duty--the American Field Service. Men over 18 years, in "good" physical condition are eligible. The American ambulance force operating in the Near East, requires one year of service, but does not excuse a driver from Selective Service should he become dissatisfied.
