Pedalling furiously, and panting desperately, John Potter '45 puffed across the finish line first to win the annual Harvard-Wellesley bicycle race yesterday morning in 36 minutes flat. He was greeted by approximately 30 cheering maidens of the institution on Lake Waban, and was presented with a bike travelling kit for his pains.
Sponsored by the Outing Club, the struggle started on the shores of Brookline's old reservoir, and, after 10 1/2 miles of hills and dales, ended on the Wellesley campus near Alumnae Hall. Eighteen men managed to last out the grind, and the first four to pass the eyes of the judge, Miller Robb of the Cambridge Bicycle Club, won prizes.
Runner-up to Potter was Sean Murphy '44, who carried off two tires as his reward, while Arthur Dricoll '45 rolled away with the third prize, a raincape. Other award winner was William Furlong '44, who was proud possessor of a new generator as a result of his efforts.
