Deacons Win House Track Meet

LOWELL RELAY BREAKS RECORD

By running away with the annual House track meet held yesterday at Soldiers Field, Kirkland House has taken a giant step toward winning another Straus Trophy, which is awarded every year to the House compiling the most points in intra-mural sports during the year.

The Deacons took first place honors with 47 points, while their nearest rival, Lowell House, placed a poor second with 29 points. In third place came Adams with 20 points, while Winthrop and Dunster followed with totals of nine and four points apiece. Dudley, Eliot, and Leverett entered the meet but failed to break into the scoring column.

About 50 men participated in the affair, which saw only one record broken. It happened in the middle distance relay race of one and three-quarter miles when a four man team from Lowell House chopped off more than 15 seconds from the former record.

Former Record by Kirkland

The quartet of Davis, Flint, Robbins, and Foisie covered the course in 7:59.3 minutes. The former mark, which was made by Kirkland House in 1937, was 8:14.5.

In the 100 yard dash, Mather came in first and Albion finished second, both of Kirkland, in 10.7 seconds. Fenn of Winthrop and Meredith of Kirkland followed in that order.

No Deacon appeared among the first three to break the tape in the mile run, with Olney of Winthrop placing first, Griffith of Dunster second, and Robbins of Lowell third. In the sprint relay affair, a quartet of Deacons, including Leslie. Wentworth, Lyons, and Meredith beat out Adams and Lowell in the time of 1:43.4.

Adams Wine Hurdles

A potent three man combination of Adams House track stars kept Kirkland out of first place in the high and low shuttle hurdle race. Binder, Handy, and Sadove each raced 100 yards in the total time of 45.8 seconds to win this affair.

In the high jump, Kirkland came in first, Lowell second, and Adams third. The winning trio of jumpers, Lester, Leslie, and Sommers leaped for a total of 15 feet, two inches.

The order of finish was exactly the same in the shot put as Lunine, Brody, and Lester heaved the 12-pound weight a total of 116 feet, two inches, giving Kirkland another first place.

In yesterday's track meet, a team scores were compiled by giving eight points to the winner, five to the runner-up, and three points for third. In individual races, first place meant six points, second four, third three, fourth two, and fifth one.

By virtue of the win, Kirkland House now has an early lead of 40 points for the Straus Trophy.
