One of the few undefeated Harvard teams fell from the ranks of the gods yesterday afternoon as a hard-playing Dartmouth soccer aggregation shut out the booting Varsity 2 to 0. It was the Crimson's third battle of the current campaign and gives them an even record of one win, one tie, one loss.
At the same time, the Freshmen, who had been successful against Worcester Academy last week, dropped their contest with the Indian yearlings 3-0.
Not until the third period were the invading Indians able to score; but then after two minutes and 40 seconds the powerful Big Green attack penetrated the Harvard backs and in a maze of confusion before the goal right inside Dick "Dizzy" Deane poured one past goalie Jack Penson.
The Dartmouths cleaned up the scoring for the afternoon in the middle of the final quarter when Penson dashed out of his frame to collect a high-headed ball. Surrounded by the Green line he allowed the ball to roll free before the goal and substitute left inside Johnny Earle dove at it and sent it bouncing off his chest between the uprights.
During the earlier periods of the conflict the Harvard eleven was able to keep pace with its opponents but between the two tallies appeared entirely outplayed. In the final periods they made a spectacular attempt at a comeback, hurling innumerable shots at the defending goalle, but to no avail.
Chief weakness of the aggregation seems to be in the halfback line, which on yet has not cooperated smoothly which the forwards. Jack Clarke, a Junior who has not played since his Freshman year, was a surprise starter at right half as Coach Jim McDonald sought to find a telling combination for the game. Clarke has both power and speed and with a little more play will attain the ball perfection he lacks at the moment.
