WASHINGTON--Far-reaching proposals to speed defense output--including a general six-day week in defense industries and government authority to draft labor as well as industry "if the situation gets serious enough"--were urged today by Glenn L. Martin, Baltimore aircraft manufacturer.
In testimony before a congressional committee investigating defense production lags, Martin also advocated that there be.
1. One directing head of defense production because "You can't run this show by committee in these times."
2. A government coordinating agency with power to draft idle machine tools and put them to work on defense material and authority to curtail non-military production in commercial plants and turn the increased capacity to the defense effort.
