An all-day downpour forced the football squad indoors yesterday afternoon for the first time this fall, but Coach Harlow did not let the rain interfere with scheduled practice plans. He drove his men through a full two hours of assorted gridiron chores, topped off by a 30 minute scrimmage.
The "A" and "B" alternated against the "C," and there were no injuries after all the dust had cleared away in Briggs Cage. At the conclusion of the scrimmage it was announced that center Tom Grover has been promoted to the red jersey squad, bringing it up to a 22 total.
Ayres Looks Good
The day's defensive standout was second - string center, Burgy Ayres, whose rapid improvement makes "Lone Star" Dietz' chances to open the season as the ranking pivot man quite doubtful. On the offense, it was Bill Brown's effective blocking which stole the show. But in the passing drill, Don McNicol and his receivers were not able to make connections often enough to please Coach Harlow.
Joe Koufman was withheld from contact work yesterday to give Don Lowry a thorough dose of scrimmage. Koufman is the first running guard and one of the four Varsity men sure of their top ranking. Chub peabody, Captain Joe Gardella, and Loren MacKinney are the others.
Spreyer Due Back
There is a scrimmage planned for today and none for tomorrow. On Saturday, however, there will be a regulation practice game. Charley Spreyer is expected back this afternoon, and he will probably need the weekend work to catch up with his mates. Joel Ferris and George Helden were jogging yesterday and will be ready soon, but John Page is definitely out for the year.
