HANOI, Indo-China--French forces defending Langson, important railroad center 82 miles northeast of here, were forced to withdraw from the city late today when attacking Japanese troops of the South China army encircled their positions.
The French withdrew after severe fighting in the face of superior numbers.
Heavy fighting had raged all day along a 50-mile front, centering on Langson. Casualties were reported heavy among the attacking Japanese, as the French poured artillery and machine-gun fire into their advancing columns form fortified positions.
