To test undergraduate opinion about hiring student waiters for the House dining halls, the Student Council Committee on Board wil conduct an extensive poll of House members Monday. Questionnaires will be distributed in the dining halls Monday during the lunch and supper hours.
The Committee, which recently completed a report charging inefficiency in the dining halls, is now working on several proposals for reducing the board rates.
Would Hire 100 Students
Seth C. Crocker '41, acting chairman, said yesterday that one plan provides for the replacement of 55 waitresses, one-half the number now employed in the Houses, by 100 students. They would earn their board by working in the dining balls on alternate days.
A fifty cent reduction in board rate might result from the proposal, Crocker said, by using the time of dining room help during breakfast hours more efficiently.
Some opposition has been voiced to the plan on the grounds that it is inconsistent with the spirit of the House system and would disrupt the "clubby" atmosphere of the Houses. The Committee therefore is unwilling to go ahead with its report until it has found out how undergraduates feel.
Questionnaire
The full page questionnaire prepared by the Committee asks: (1) "If a saving of $.50 per week per person were made possible by the partial replacement of waitresses by student waiters, would you favor such a change?" and (2) "If it is found that no immediate saving can be effected by the employment of student waiters in the Houses, would you, nevertheless, be in favor of their employment?"
