LITTLE OLD NEW YORK:--Some years ago a comely little chicken named Alice Faye launched on a screen career with a song called "This Year's Crop of Kisses." America stormed the box offices, Miss Faye has now decided she's an actress. America is storming the exits. As far as Miss Faye is concerned, "Little Old New York" is a very unfortunate event. Otherwise it is an amiable historical biography of Robert Fulton, who tries and tries and tries and finally produces a steam boat (without sails) that MOVES! Richard Green is acting more like Robert Taylor in every picture--and hence is under suspicion. But Fred MacMurray gives one of his better performances. Not a bad picture, on the whole, but not a terribly good one, either.
THE SIDEWALKS OF LONDON:--Chiefly notable for the performance of the pre-GWTW Vivien Leigh. Added attractions: views of pre-war London, lead performance by a post-prime Laughton, and a distinctly pre- (or post) Hayes office clinch involving Miss Leigh and "Strangler Rex" Harrison. Highly recommended for all Leigh fans,--and their name is legion.
