The stage was set for a spectacular finish as Harvard and Yale squared off on Saturday afternoon at the Belmont Country Club lodged in a tie for first place in the Northern division of the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf League. The Crimson and the Blue responded with one of the closest athletic contests Harvard and Yale have ever waged, with the final verdict going to the Elis, 6 1/2 to 2 1/2.
A wind of gale proportions sent scores upward, and low medal honors for the day were shared by Yale's brilliant Ed Meister and his partner Page with 74's. Meister edged Captain Ace Cordingley 2-1 and paired with Page for a best ball victory in the first foursome. Page gave the Blue boys their third point by beating Watty Dickerman.
Graves concluded his match play career at Harvard with his 23rd straight win--over Gordon Brown by a 3-2 count. Pete Macgowan at number six gave Harvard another point by defeating Ed Callan, 2-1. Yale added its fourth point when Ed Gravely rallied to beat Don Peddie, 2 up. Thus the score stood 4 to 2 for the Els with three matches undecided after 18 holes of play. Harvard needed all of the extra hole matches for victory.
On the 19th Gerry Davis bowed in defeat, and Peddie and Macgowan lost their best ball match. The last point still out, the Graves - Davis best ball bout was stopped at the 20th with a half point going to each side. On Saturday morning the Hoddermen had trimmed Holy Cross, 9 to 0, and assured themselves of at least a third in the league.
The Crimson Freshmen were swamped by a strong Exeter sextet, 8-1.
