Now that "April" hours and the exce increasing expense of the Charles' murky waters are doing their best to dispel Cambridge's wintry atmosphere, hopes at the Newell Boat House are high for outside rowing in the immediate future.
Basking in a comparatively southern atmosphere, the Eli sweepswingers have been in the open since March 6, and M.I.T. has already been sufficiently affected by Boston's balmy breezes to set up float stages, thus gaining a head-start on the ice-bound Crimson.
New paint and Varnish jobs on the launches and a set of new sweeps are the only tangible signs of spring at Newell, but Coach Tom Bolles hopes to be on the water late next week, a little later than last year's tardy opening date of March 17.
