"I hope the Americans don't think that Finland no longer needs their help. The country is devastated and needs assistance more than over," stated Jaakko Mikkola, varsity track coach, interviewed yesterday on his reactions to the Russo-Finnish peace.
"What licked Finland at this point was the fear that her land would be the battlefield of the world's war. Such a tragedy would have devastated it more than a complete Russian victory."
Michael Karpovich, assistant professor of History, when asked his opinion of Russia's decision, stated that "there is a good chance that Stalin decided on peace, although a complete victory was in his grasp, because of popular discontent with the war.
Stalin Cautions
"Despite his totalitarianism," Karpovich continued, "Stalin is cautions and sensitive to the feelings of the populace. He has saved himself more than once by a timely retreat."
"In my opinion Stalin and Hitler are going to sit tight now, consolidate their gains, and let the Allies make the next more. Russia probably will not grab Bessarabia in the near future, because that might frighten the Turks into the war and with them the Allies, who probably will not be able to move into the Balkans unless Turkey is at war with Russia."
"Time fights on the side of the Nazis now that peace has been established between Finland and Russia," Carl J. Friedrich, professor of Government, stated when asked what effect the peace would have on Germany.
Finland's demise can be used by Hitler to show other neutral countrys what happens to those who listen to appeals from London and Paris. Furthermore the Nazis can now use the peace in Russia to strengthen economic relations with that country, he said.
