During the past year the Arnold Arboretum has received 2,423 living plants, 121 cuttings, and 2,225 packets of seeds, according to the annual report made public yesterday by Elmer D. Merrill, Arnold Professor of Botany and Director of the Arboretum. During the same time the Arboretum has distributed 1,173 living plants, 691 cuttings, and about 12,000 packets of seeds.
Improvement of ornamental plants through genetic methods were stressed during the past year, and considerable study was devoted to the activities of plant discases. Field work in New England, Northwestern Canada, and Mexico has been conducted, and also through cooperative work financed by small grants from the Arboretum to selected Chinese institutions a very large amount of work has been prosecuted in the Far East.
$14,544 was donated to the Aboretum for all purposes. Of this .$500 was from the Massachusetts Society for promoting Agriculture.
