After half a season the Varsity basket-ball team has become quite used to being the underdog in every game, and it will be playing its usual role tonight when the Princeton Tiger, second ranking quintet in the League, invades the Indoor Athletic Building quite confident of handing another trimming to the sixth-place Crimson.
But Coach Wes Fesler had enough tricks up his sleeve to surprise Columbia last month and Tufts last week, and he almost gave the powerful Dartmouth team the surprise of its life Wednesday night. The big question now is whether he has enough to send the Tiger back to his lair a beaten pussy.
Same Lineup
Fesler will start the same lineup that looked so good against the Indians, with Bill Webber and Charley Lutz at forwards, Same White at center, and Ed Buckley and Bud Finegan at guards.
Princeton will present a strong lineup headed by Johnny Meyerholz, six foot three center, who starred at end on the football team last fall. Dan Carmichael, veteran six-footer, and Sophomore Paul Busse are slated for the forward posts, while a pair of Seniors, Captain Ed Green and Bob Stewart, are the probable guards.
Meyerholz is by all odds the outstanding man on the team. With 23 points to his credit he stands twelfth in league standings, and it is his playing that has gained the Tigers their two League wins.
Coach Frank Cappon has a capable substitute for Meyerholz in Bob Peters, another six foot three, 195-pound football player, who starred at halfback last fall. A Sophomore and a Southerner, Peters is sure to see service tonight and may even start some place in the line.
As usual, the Harvard team will be depending on its speed and quickness to score the hoped for upset. The tactics of working the ball in from the center of the floor to a spot where a set shot can be tried or all the way in under the basket made the Indians look sheepish during most of Wednesday's encounter and should be even more effective tonight.
The team held light drills both Thursday and yesterday, smoothing off the rough spots.
The Freshmen will give early-comers something to watch as they take on Andover at 7 o'clock in an attempt to repeat their victory over Worcester Wednesday afternoon. The Varsity game begins at 8:30 o'clock.
