Lining Them Up

With the season more than half gone, the soccer team boasts a record of three wins, one tie and one defeat. Since the strong Williams, Dartmouth and Princeton elevens have already been faced, a showing like the above definitely puts the Carrmen in very good standing. Another hard one is on the docket today when the Crimson takes on Springfield. This should be the last real until the Yale tilt two weeks from now.

But like all coaches, Jack Carr has his worries. The biggest one is whether to put Captain Dave Ives at halfback or fullback. If he plays the former position the rear guard lacks the necessary defensive strength. The same goes for the halfbacks when Ives is at the fullback post. The last arrangement seemed the better until the serious Princeton walkaway last week, and now it is very possible that he will be moved back to his original halfback duties for the Springfield match. It all boils down to this: with one more strong fullback, Coach Carr would be sitting on top of the world.

A little sleep might be lost over the lack of scoring punch in the forward line, too. Almost all the booters' victories have been too close for much comfort. Look at the record: they beat Massachusetts State by one lone penalty kick, and ended with only a one point margin in their 4 to 3 win over Williams. In that 1 to 1 tie with Darmouth the boys threatened the Big Green nets enough, but that certain something that would have broken the deadlock was lacking. Yet it must be remembered that there are two efficient Sophomores, Herky Herskovits and Jack Sawhill, among the forwards, so with a little more work together the offense should begin to click.

One can't help being encouraged by the Sophomore strength on the squad. Carr lost five valuable regulars last year, and knew he would have to rely a great deal on the crack '43 team of last year. Well, he must be pretty well satisfied for they all have come up to expectations, especially Herskovits, Sawhill and Jack Calhoun. If Al Merck had returned to college there might have been no fullback problem. And according to Jimmy MacDonald, the Freshman coach, this year's crop of Yardlings are doing very well by themselves.

Of course everything points to the Yale game, and it should be breath-taker this year. The Bulldogs have a record much like that of the Crimson, and for comparison they tied Williams 1 to 1 and beat Springfield 1 to 0. So the outcome in today's game with Springfield will be an important criterion, and the westerners always go in for soccer in a big way. Anyway, as the old saying goes, "anything can happen in the Yale game."
