VARSITY FIVE OPENS DRILLS FOR SEASON

Coach Fesler to Balance Lack Of Height with Large Reserve

Wes Fesler sent his Varsity basketball squad through its first scrimmage of the season yesterday afternoon, pitting his first and second quintets against the third and fourth outfits respectively.

Captain Frannie Simpson and Joe Romano are the forwards on the current first five, Ed Rothschild is the center, and Bud Finegan and Ed Buckley are the guards. The forwards on the second team are Bill Webber and Dick Craig, the center Homer Peabody, and the guards Bob James and Johnny Rigby.

Small Team Again

The squad is just as small in stature as it was last year, but there is some hope that Harvard may have ten capable hoopmen instead of only six or seven to throw into big games this season. The difference between the first and second teams is not great, and Coach Fesler may be able to offset the decided lack of height by shooting fresh men into the game repeatedly.

Most of the names on the squad are familiar ones. Homer Peabody was kept out of action last year because of a knee injury, but he won his letter two years ago. Junior Dick Craig, a lanky forward, is the only real newcomer to the select group.

Third and fourth team positions are almost interchangeable, but here is the way they lined up yesterday. Charley Royer and Don McSweeney were third string forwards, Larry Hall was the center, and Bill Jackson and Jack Clarke were the guards. On the fourth it was Jim Jenkins and Howie Ezell at forward, Pete Macgowan at center, and A1 Reade and Ray Holtan in the back court. Red Scully and Buzz Downer were not scrimmaging yesterday but be long on the list.

The opening game is with M. I. T. in Hangar Gym next Friday night. The Techmen have another good club and will be doubly tough on their own floor.
