Coach Jaakko Mikkola's harriers stand a better than even chance of completing their third spotless season by outrunning Yale and Princeton in the annual triangular meet at 3:10 o'clock today on the Middlesex Fells Reservation course.
Led by Captain Lang Burwell, the Mikkolamen boast victories this year over B. U., Dartmouth, Holy Cross, and N. H. against no losses, while Yale's record includes wins over M. I. T. and Wesleyan but a defeat by Connecticut. The Tigers have downed Penn and Columbia but have succumbed to N. Y. U., Army, and Navy.
In addition to being the favorites on paper, the Crimson forces will have a decided advantage in being able to run on the familiar 5.1 mile hilly course in Medford.
Burwell Gets Praise
According to Coach Mikkola, prospects looked very poor at the beginning of this season because of the graduation of last year's stars Tuttle, Wing, Lightbody, and Clark. The mentor credits Burwell as being largely responsible for the team's improvement.
Backing up Burwell come Joe McLoughlin, Bob Burns, Mal MacKenzie, Bob Jay, Kay Rogers, John Sopka, Paul Cook, and Joe Scott. Yale's hopes rest on Bill Bird, Mal Main, and Henry Mann, while Princeton's strength lies in Ed Burrows and Dave Little, son of the Master of Adams House.
Harvard is also favored to capture the Freshman 2.9 mile race starting at 3 o'clock. The outstanding runner in this event will be Yale's LeRoy Schwarzkopf, son of the famous Michigan runner, who is reported capable of doing a 4:16 mile.
Despite the fact that the Crimson is considered the favorite, Mikkola pointed out last night that either Yale or Princeton could easily upset the meet. But, he added that the Crimson's well balanced strength down the line should prove too much for the individual stars of the opposing teams.
