Over the Wire

(October 18--By United Press.)

LONDON--The shattering of a Nazi attempt to land troops on the British Isles and a naval air battle near the entrance to Bristol Channel that sent four marauding German destroyers fleeing back to the French "invasion port" of Brest were reported officially today.

Adolf Hitler's attempt at the a sea-borne invasion of Britian was said by the air ministry to have been fustrated on Sept. 16 when RAF bombers laid siege to his massed transports and forced the Nazi troops to abandon ship.

The attempt came a few hours after Hitler hurled his mightiest air armada against the British Isles and suffered his worst defeat of the war in the air--at least 185 Nazi planes shot down on Sept. 15.

It was contended that the assault was intended to break the backbone of British resistance and open the way for the actual invasion.
