Teaching Leads in Employment of '39 Philosophy Doctors

81 Out of 107 Enter Education or Research, Annual Report Reveals

The employment records of the 107 men receiving the degree of Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1938-39 were disclosed today in the annual report of Acting Dean Lawrence S. Mayo.

Teaching and research have claimed 81 of the men, who hold posts in 36 different colleges and universities, and six schools, Dean Mayo reported. Eight of the men have gone into industry, and six into government service; the employment of 11 is unreported.

Enrollment of students of 1938-39 established a now high record for the school, with 1,111 men registered. The previous high was in 1931-32 when 1,105 enrolled. The division of History, Government and Economics enrolled 341 students, maintaining its lead over the other departments, Marked increases in registration were shown by the departments of chemistry, biology, and music.

Fifty-four colleges sent five or more graduates to the school.
