Coach Clark Hodder's Varsity linksmen have emerged from their first four matches on Helmont with only a 500 voting, but also they seem to have passed the experimental stage as far as their lineup in concerned. It is new almost certain that just about the strongest six-man team which the Crimson can present is Ace Cordingly, Bob Graves, Captain Jack Barr, Henry Thompson, Don Elbel, and Watty Dickerman.
The first four men named handed St. John's College a next 0 to 0 setback, and with the help of Lou Roswer and Dickerman trimmed Boston University 0 1/2 to 2 1/2 in a six-man encounter. Then came successive defeats, and equally tough to take, of 5 to 4 at the hands of Bowdoln and Amherst.
Cordingly and Graves
The first two men, big 190 lb. Ace Cordingly and slender Bob Graves, are now Juniors and have played together since their Freshman year. Cordingly, only recently recovered from a football injury, in the Big Bertha of the outfit and Graves' long, well-balanced game belies his weight. Last summer, Cordingly climaxed a summer of golfing wars by finishing as low Amateur in the Iowa State Open.
Captain Jack Barr and his Senior mate Henry Thompson form the second best due that Hodder can send up to the firing line. Barr is rather light but makes up for it with a steady all-round game. It any one part of his game stands out from the rest, it is his putting. Thompson in heavier and longer off the tee, but again his main forte is consistency.
Sophomore Elbel and Dickerman
Don Elbel and Watty Dickerman have graduated from the ranks of last year's Yardling squad up to the Varsity. They are the cream of an abnormal crop, and their places on the first six are not absolutely secure at the present time. Elbel had a creditable 77 for his medal in his only Varsity match against Bowdoin, and he definitely has the inside track for the number five spot. Behind him is tall Watty Dickerman, ready to withstand the challenge of Lou Roewer and Bill Calfee for his job.
Roewer and Calfee are both Seniors and may break into the lineup if they can acquire a bit more consistency. Calfee has started slowly and needs more work to bring his game up to its peak; Roewer has a long tee shot but he too wild. With more practice, either of these men could press Elbel and Dickerman for their positions.
The squad takes its first out-of-town trip this weekend with Dartmouth and Brown providing the opposition on Friday and Saturday respectively in Providence. On the following Friday, they tangle with the Holy Cross linksters at another neutral battleground--New Haven. The next day Yale and William will oppose the Crimson in a double bill in the morning and afternoon. Next, the boys will be on deck for the New England Intercollegiates at Oakley Country Club.
