Some of the best material in years combines to make the second and third crews perhaps the most outstanding subvarsity eighth in quite a while. And, although Tom Bolles withholds any definite comment on the prospects of the Varsity boat, he has said definitely that this year's Jayvee boats are the best in two years.
Last years's phenomenal Freshman crew has moved in on the first two boats in a body with the exception of stroke Wagner who is new at four on the third boat and Benn Riggs who is not rowing this year. In addition to this, there are two sophomores who rowed on the second Freshman boat last year who have turned up in the second shell. This all points to the fact that there is keen competition in the first three boats, especially when men who were on the Jayvees last year are unable to make it this year.
Second Crew Boating
The second crew stands at the present: Wilson, stroke; Hinckley, seven; Taylor, six; Kingman, five; Reed, four; Moffat, three; Hovey, two; Ninde, bow; and Fox at coxswain. The Sophomores on the crew are Wilson, Hinckley, Taylor, Reed, and Moffat.
In the fall of its Freshman year, Jack Wilson started out at stroke on the 150-pound boat, and he stroked his crew through to win the impressive cup, kept in the Union, that is awarded to the best Freshman crew to row in the fall. The next spring he was raised to stroke the second Freshman and finally the combination crew that raced at New Haven. As still another step in his career he has been made stroke of the Jayvees.
Third Crew and 150
The third crew boating is: Comstock, stroke; Reece, seven; Burr, six; Whitman, five; Wagner, four; Hallowell, three; Goodwin, two; Dillingham, bow; and Kiney as the coxswain.
Returning with four men of last year's Varsity 150-pound crew, this year's light weight boat looks like it should give its opponents a good stiff run for their money. Last year's boat was only defeated when it was cut out of Henley finals in England, so a large returning group should mean a great deal. It seems fairly conclusive however, that the light weights will not venture upon foreign waters this year. The boating: Bailey, stroke; Turner, seven; Pierce, six; Gifford, five; Hazard, four; Crocker, three; Koeniger, two; Gilkey, bow; and Larner in the cox's seat.
