Slovaks Push Back Hungarians

BRATISLAVA -- Slovak military planes bombarded Hungarian troops near the Slovak towns of Trebischov, Michalovce and Sobrance near the Hungarian-Carpatho-Ukrainian borders today, official communiques declared.

Hungarian fighting planes also were used in a day of intensive fighting. According to the communiques the Slovaks drove the Hungarians back all along the front.

Heaviest casualties so far reported were the deaths of six civilians and seven soldiers in the town of Zips, where seven Hungarian planes dropped five large bombs and many smaller missiles.

The center of the day's fighting was Michalovce, which withstood a Hungarian siege while Hungarian and Slovak planes battled overhead. During one fight, in which 17 planes were engaged, four Hungarian and two Slovak planes were reported shot down and four other Slovak planes made forced landings. Two Slovak planes were still missing. Bratislava residents were tense with fear that their city would be bombarded, though Slovaks generally believe that this is unlikely since Germany probably would consider it a cause of war.
