SANTA ANITA PARK, Cal.--Neil McCarthy's "Today," a 6-1 outsider in a three-horse field, defeated the great "Seabiscuit" by two and a quarter lengths today in track record time for the mile allowance event.
The race marked the 1933 handicap champion's return to the track in preparation for the $100,000 Santa Anita Handicap, which he is the favorite to win.
"Seabiscuit" pulled up slightly lame but trainer Tom Smith said no diagnosis could be made immediately. The horse was favoring his right forefoot an he left the track.
