RIFLE CLUB RECEIVES MINOR SPORT STATUS

HEPTAGONAL, IC4A WINNING TOP FIVE GET MAJOR H'S

At its meeting on Monday the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports voted a minor sport status to the rifle club and the right to award six H's, including the manager.

The Committee also voted to award a major H to any member of the cross country team who finishes among the first seven in the Heptagonal or IC4A meets and to award a major H to the first five Harvard men on either a Heptagonal or IC4A championship hill-and-dale squad.

Competition will start immediately for the Varsity rifle team among the club members in the Memorial Hall shooting range, and the Freshman tryouts will be held soon. The shooting range will be open all this week to anybody interested in joining the club.

Sargeant F. A. Phinney of the Boston Marine Corps and one of the ten best shots in the country has volunteered his services as coach of the Varsity. Mr. Groote, chief petty officer of the Harvard Naval ROTC, will instruct the Freshman candidates. In addition, a class for beginners has been arranged.

The shooting gallery in the basement of Memorial Hall will be the scene of several home matches which have been scheduled already. The five-man team will journey to New Haven to match shots with the Elis sometime in March.
