A renewed drive against begging in Harvard Square has been inaugurated by the Phillips Brooks House, Raymond Dennett '36, Graduate Secretary, announced last night.

"For the first month and a half of every college year Harvard Square is a haven for various types of professional spongers who prey on the gullible Harvard men for hand-outs," Dennett said.

The Graduate Secretary of the Brooks House claimed knowledge of at least two men who have collected between $1.50 and $4 in three hours with their hard-luck stories. "One of these men is Albert Pike, who is known to several agencies in Boston and Cambridge as a steady and consistent sponger, whose story is invariably convincing," Dennett stated.

Dennett advised that if a student really wishes to help beggars, he should either buy a book of meal tickets at some restaurant, or take the man's name and consult the files of some relief agency.
