"Robin Hood" is not an epic, despite the excellent filming by Technicolor; it is not a classic, for its departs too much from the classical legends; it is a most entertaining melodrama with a proper mixture of suspense, comedy, and romance.
The prince of swashbucklers, Errol Flynn, plays the lead in the real Douglas Fairbanks manner, winning his duels, his lady love, and the cheers of the multitude all in the same breathless instant.
Olivia De Havilland couldn't be more ravishing and, cast to type, her only convincing scenes are d'Amour. The villainous villain, Sir Guy of Gisbourne, is the able Basil Rathbone. The supporting cast, including the familiar Little John and Friar Tuck, are true to their storybook types, and everybody has a wonderful time.
