STUDENT GROUP TO FIGHT GOV. HURLEY

HAS 30 MEMBERS

With the immediate objective of supporting Robert J. Watt, labor leader, against Governor Hurley in the Democratic primaries next fall, the recently organized Student Progressive League now claims a membership of 30, and representatives from Boston University, M.I.T., and Simmons.

Independent of the H.S.U., but drawing heavily from its ranks for membership, the organization has been formed to organize student opinion in Massachusetts to aid the Non-Partisan Labor League, backed by both the A.F. of L. and the C.I.O., in supporting progressive candidates from both parties.

Bullitt Chairman

Logan Bullitt '41, Chairman of the committee, said last night, "The Student Progressive Committee aims to combine liberal and progressive minded students throughout the whole Boston area to work for progressive purposes in the fall elections. This group should be wide both in constituent groups "and in its aims."

Beside supporting Watt next fall, the League will probably back New-Dealer Thomas H. Eliot '28, lecturer on Government, in a campaign for Congress from the ninth Massachusetts district. Charles Miller, progressive Republican State Congressman from Dorchester, may also receive League support.

Other activities projected include research for the Non-Partisan League with end of presenting voters with a historical study of the labor movement and with an analysis of issues in the campaign, particularly economic ones.
