Head basketball coach, Wes Fesler, held the preliminary meeting of the Spring practice session for all squad candidates at the Varsity Club last night.
Coach Fesler said that the purpose of spring training was to give the team an intensive drill on fundamentals. He explained that an extra session was needed this year because there would be few returning lettermen around whom to form next year's team.
Last season there was no such training period because the lettermen situation was quite different. There were many veteran squad members to answer Coach Fesler's call for candidates in the fall.
He told the assembled Upper-classmen and Freshmen that the practices would only last one hour. The plan is to have them scheduled from Monday through Thursday until the last part of May.
The program will start on Wednesday at either 5 or 7 o'clock, depending upon which hour is more satisfactory for the majority of the players.
Common in Middle West
This is the second spring practice session called by Coach Fesler in his five years as mentor of the Crimson five. He pointed out that it was a common procedure in Mid-Western Universities and at Pennsylvania.
Of the 25 men who came to the meeting, 10 were Freshmen, and in their number was included all but one members of Skip Stahley's 1937-38 regular team. Captain-elect Lupe Lupien headed the list of reporting Varsity lettermen, and this year's Jayvee squad was well represented.
