Hundreds of dollars, including many gifts of substantial size, have been contributed toward the fund to support refugee students at Harvard next year, according to an announcement of the Harvard Refugee Committee.

The committee's goal is $10,000, which will be used to defray the living expenses of the twenty German students who are selected for the twenty 75000 scholarships voted last week by Harvard Corporation.

Under the terms of the corporation's grant, for each $500 scholarship an equal sum must be raised by the college community. Full utilization of the scholarships therefore will depend upon the success of the committee's campaign for funds.

Only upper classmen and graduate students will be eligible for the scholarships, according to present plans. A special committee appointed by President Conant will select the recipients on the basis of merit.

The Harvard Refugee Committee, which is headed by Robert E. Lane '39, sprung into existence following a rally two weeks ago to protest Nazi outrages. It has grown rapidly, and now is working on several fronts. The immediate and primary purpose, however, is to raise the $10,000 fund.

Sponsors of the committee include the Harvard Student Council and ten other student organizations, with a combined membership of more than 1,500. More than a score of outstanding faculty members also are acting as sponsors.
