Burns Nabbed With Ice

NEW YORK--George Burns, the "straight" half of the famous vaudeville and radio comedy team of Burns & Allen, walked into federal court today and pleaded guilty to a secret indictment charging him with smuggling $4,885 worth of jewelry into the country as presents for his wife, Gracie Allen.

Burns, one of the highest paid radio stars in the country, flew here from Hollywood as soon as he learned of the charges and immediately entered his plea. The maximum penalty is 18 years in prison and $45,000 fine.

The indictments were part of an investigation of the supposed smuggling operations of Albert L. Chaperau, self-styled member of the Nicaraguan Consular Service and allegedly an international smuggler.
