RECRUITING STUDENTS

Dr. James Bryant Conant, President of Harvard University, has become well known for his progressive ideas in education and particularly for his desire to help brilliant students to obtain a college education whether or not they have the necessary money.

Perhaps the most definite statement of Dr. Conant's ideas came Monday when he addressed the Harvard Club at Kansas City. The poor child should have equal educational opportunities with the richer ones, he said.

He indicated that it should be the job of the college to discover promising students in high schools and offer them scholarships sufficient to cover their financial needs. If resources of the university are not strong enough to do this, the expense should be paid by taxation, declared the educator.

Dr. Conant said that those students now working their way through college are of the highest type and added, "we can afford to bet heavily on them by paying all their expenses of education." The Harvard president enunciated the doctrine upon which education will probably be carried on in the future. At least his suggestion seems to be the most democratic method yet proposed. --Syracuse Daily Orange.
