Bellboys Squeeze Out Eliot Nine 9-8 for Their First Win

Yesterday's big game saw the rejuvenation of Lowell House which rose out of its cellar position with a starting defeat of the Eliot Elephants 9-8. The mound work of Eliot B. Knowlton '38 was effective in subduing Eliot, as the Bellboys pounded Arnold S. Litman '38 for ten hits.

With the score 8-4 against them in the first of the seventh Eliot put on a stirring rally. Combining a walk and two Bellboy errors with a two-run double by Cleveland Amory '39, and a timely single by Sheldon P. Peterfreund '39, the Elephants deadlocked the ball game.

Lowell was not to be quelled, however, and gamely crammed the hassocks with two out. A two-bagger by John A. Carter '38 was the telling blow in the proceedings. Then with the count three and two, John L. Dampeer '38 was walked, forcing in the winning marker. Winthrop walked away with their game, 19-6 from a week Adams nine. Adams started out strong with three runs and three hits in the first inning against the slants of Edward La B. Cherbonnier '39.

Daniel E. Burbank '37 went in on the Winthrop mound and held the Gold Coasters in check as he and his teammates romped at bat, scoring four runs in the first inning on one hit and numerous errors, nine runs in the second, and two in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Batting honors for Winthrop went to Downs, dependable third baseman, who registered four hits and scored thrice. Dark horse ace of the Puritan squad was Verner E. Kelly '37, who made a spectacular catch of a center field fly, and smacked out a triple on his last trip to the plate.

New Adams pitching talent was uncovered as Morris G. Manker '38 and Irving H. Soden each spent two innings on the mound. Soden dazzled the Puritans in the fifth by striking out two of them with his sizzling speed balls.
