Presentation of keys and initiation of the junior eight into the Phi Beta Kappa Society took place last night in the Eliot House room of the Society of Fellows. At the same time Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38 was elected secretary-treasurer of the chapter.
Speakers were C. Norman Fay '69, oldest member of the chapter, Millard B. Gulick '13, and Arthur M. Schlesinger, professor of history. Samuel Williston '82, president of the Harvard chapter, acted as toastmaster.
Neil G. Melone '37, retiring first marshal of the chapter, spoke on the historical background of the society at Harvard and outline the aims and purposes. Schlesinger, the new secretary-treasurer, also spoke briefly.
Those initiated were Francis G. Blake, Jr., John L. Dampeer, Richard T. Davis, Alan S. Geismer, John A. Moore, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., A. Judson Wells, Jr., and Theodore H. White.
