On Tuesday in its toughest game so far this season, Kirkland combined three walks and two hits with an error for five runs, to beat Winthrop 5-2. All of Kirkland's runs came in the third inning. Bernard G. Marks '39 opened the inning by reaching first on the shortstop's error.
William H. Howe, Jr. '37 and Jerry LeR. Abrams '39 fanned, but then Maurice Sapienza '37, who otherwise pitched a superb game for Winthrop, got a streak of wildness and walked the next three men, forcing in a run and filling the bases. Clean-up man Charles W. Kessler '37 leaned on the next pitch with 250 pounds of muscle and cleared the bases with a triple, scoring on a single by Charles E. Carr 1G.
Byren W. Moser, Jr. '37 pitched effectively for the league-leading Deacons, striking out 7 and allowing only one hit, a single by Sapienza in the third inning. Winthrop scored their run in the fifth on errors.
The lineup: Eliot Downs Adams Eliot outscored the Adams House nine 12-5 in a wild scoring fray in Tuesday's other game. Paul R. Wiley '37 kept the potent Elephant bats under control at times, but three batting splurges netted them a dozen runs. When the Gold Coasters took their turn at the stick they came up against an infield that only made one error all afternoon, something of a record in House baseball.
