On Thursday, April 15, the House baseball season opened with a close victory by Winthrop over Eliot, 3-2. Winthrop out-hit Eliot, 6-4, in a game marked by good pitching and fine early-season fielding, Eliot chalking up 4 errors to Winthrop's 1. Winthrop struck early, making two runs in the first inning and another in the fourth; Eliot's markers crossed the plate in the fifth. The line-ups: On the same day, Dudley failed to field a team and defaulted to Leverett. Yesterday, Kirkland opened up her season by trouncing, Lowell, 12-0. Aided by Lowell errors and eight hits from the Kirkland bats, the Deacons showed the effect of pre-season practice, Ross, Kirkland pitcher, allowing Lowell only four hits. Donald W. Davis, Jr. '37, lead-off man for the Deacons, pounded out a double and a triple to lead hits mates to an overwhelming victory. The line-ups: In the other game yesterday, Dunster staved off a last inning rally by Adams to win, 11-8. Leading Dunster-Funsters was George S. Ford '37, who, batting in the clean-up position, smacked out four hits, including a double. Expert fielding was contributed by George W. Blackwood '37 at short-stop for Dunster. In the last half of the seventh inning, Adams staged a rally as John R. Findley '37 knocked out a single, followed by Texas Leaguers by W. Brooks Cavin '37 and Richard O. Howe '37. With the bases loaded and two out, Hubert H. Hauck '38 dribbled a ball to the pitcher for an easy force at home plate, ending the rally and the game. The line-ups: Golf Season Opens The first House golf matches held at the Trapelo Golf course on Thursday saw Lowell edging out Kirkland, 5-4, in a decisive match. Dunster conquered Adams, 6-3, and Leverett swamped Dudley, 81/2-1/2. Winthrop failed to produce a team and the Eliot team had to return home untested, receiving a score of 9-0 for the default.
